Decluttering, Decorating & Making a Difference
Last month, Taking Ownership PDX wrapped up a multi-day project that highlighted the heart of our mission: empowering Black homeowners in Portland by addressing critical repairs and fostering community connections.
This particular homeowner inherited their house, but over the years, it had fallen into disrepair. We partnered with them, alongside the city and our incredible volunteers, to tackle the first steps of restoration. The team worked tirelessly to clean out the property and bring in an inspection team to assess the scope of work needed to make this house safe, livable, and full of promise once again.
While working on this home, we extended our efforts to a neighbor across the street who needed help getting ready for the holidays. We assisted them in decluttering and organizing their space, then helped put up their Christmas tree and outdoor decorations.
The year ahead is shaping up to be full of opportunity and impact. By aligning our resources, volunteer teams, and community partnerships, we’re gearing up to tackle even more projects that address the challenges of gentrification and displacement faced by Portland’s Black homeowners.
Through every project, every cleanup, and every conversation, we’re reminded of the strength and resilience of our community. And none of it would be possible without the unwavering support of donors, volunteers, and partners who share our vision for a more equitable Portland.
