Taking Ownership PDX's Impactful Garden Project
At Taking Ownership PDX, we believe in the power of community and the impact of lending a helping hand. Our recent Community Impact Project exemplified these values as we joined forces to assist a community elder with their extensive home garden. This individual, who has traditionally managed their garden solo, faced challenges due to health issues, making it difficult to maintain their cherished space.
On the day of the project, we were heartened to see around 20 volunteers, along with the homeowner's crew, come together. Collaborating with Equitable Giving Circle, a Portland Black Women and Black Femme led organization, we set out to make a tangible difference in someone’s life. We were also supported by Stoopid Burger, a local black-owned food truck, who generously provided lunch for all our volunteers.
Jed Overly, our dedicated volunteer director, highlighted the core principles that guide us:
"For us, project success is based on three key components: Is the homeowner happy? Did we leave things better than we found them? And did we support community with community? Any time we can say 'yes' to all three, then I consider the project to be successful."
The impact of our efforts was palpable. The homeowner expressed profound gratitude, amazed at the transformation achieved in just a day. Their daughter shared that what would typically take six weeks of work was accomplished in a mere six hours, showcasing the effectiveness of collective action and shared purpose.
Our commitment to community-based initiatives extends beyond this project. If you know a Black homeowner in need of assistance with their yard, garden, or decluttering project, please reach out to us on our website here. Taking Ownership PDX is here to lend a helping hand, strengthen bonds within our community, and make a meaningful impact where it's needed most.
